FAQ

Who can participate in TOYchallenge?
Girls and boys in grades 5-8. The program is flexible enough that it can be used in school, after school, homeschool, with a neighborhood group, or as part of any youth-based organization. A team consists of 3 to 6 members, at least half of whom must be girls. One adult is the team coach.
Do team members need to have a science background?
No! TOYchallenge is designed to inspire, motivate, and encourage learning basic design principles and problem-solving skills among all students with an interest. Through their TOYchallenge experience girls and boys also learn about planning, research, collaboration, mentorship, and teamwork.
How do I Sign Up my team to participate?
Coaches are expected to sign up online at www.TOYchallenge.com. If this is not possible, please call or write us.
When can I Sign Up?
TOYchallenge signup generally begins in the fall. For the exact date, please check the Timeline page.
How much time is involved?
That is left to the discretion of the team. One or two meetings per week for at least two hours is recommended.
Does the coach need to have a technical background?
No. A technical background may be helpful, but is not necessary. Interest, guidance, and enthusiasm are most important. Learning alongside the team is expected.
What information is required for online Sign Up?
General contact information and a valid email address for the coach are required (all updates and TOYchallenge information will be sent via email). The coach will need a credit card for the sign up fee.
What is the total cost for a team to participate in TOYchallenge?
In addition to the Sign up fee, additional costs can vary depending on whether the team plans to attend the Nationals. Teams are responsible for their own transportation to the Nationals (some travel assistance may be available). The budget for developing your toy or game prototype is fixed, and explained in our rules and guidelines.
Can we drop out and get a refund?
No. The sign up fee has been implemented for this very reason. We want to discourage people from signing up then dropping out. We hope the fee is an incentive for teams to stick with it!
What do I need to know after signing up?
We will contact your coach via email to let her/him know that more details on the program are posted online. At that time, teams should start brainstorming new toy ideas and develop creative ways to tell us about the idea via supporting materials.
